Faculty of Dentistry as a separate unit exists since 1958, but back in 1894 began teaching dental students of the Medical Faculty of Lviv University. First Department of Dentistry was established at the dental clinic, which operated from 1905, in 1913 Professor, MD, and in the future – a corresponding member of the USSR A. Cieszyn. He headed the department until 1941. Research team got him recognition far outside Galicia. After the Second World War dentistry course at the Department of Surgery Hospital Lviv Medical Institute led MD, professor O.V.Koval, who in 1958 was one of the founders of active dental faculty, as well as its dean. In 1972 the dean of the dental faculty was elected professor Ye.V.Hotsko, from 1992 to 2004 headed the dean Professor I.M.Hot; from 2004 to 2012 was dean Professor R.M.Stupnytskyy. Since June 2012 dean performs Associate Professor, MD RZ Ohonovskyy.
Faculty of Dentistry now has 10 departments, including 4 profile. Potential dental chairs make up 13 professors, 11 MD, 53 associate professors, 84 PhD, 45 assistants. 55 years there were more than 6500 degrees dentists, trained students from 47 countries. Now the dental faculty trained nearly 1,000 students, including about 70 foreigners. Faculty prepares educational qualification level “specialist” in accordance with the educational qualification characteristics and educational and professional program curriculum specialty “Dentistry”.
Basic knowledge students gain in theoretical and clinical departments during the first two courses. Initial medical students master skills in the manufacturing practice (Nursing Care and Nursing) at the bases of clinical departments and health facilities in Lviv, Volyn, Transcarpathian and Rivne regions.
Students have the opportunity to undergo clinical training in the use of advanced methods of diagnosis, prevention and treatment of dental. In the educational, scientific, medical and diagnostic process widely used features of modern computer technology and advanced equipment. Practical skills and knowledge acquired dental students during their studies at four specialized departments over the next three years. Throughout the program students take the licensing exam test “Step 1” and the third “Step 2” in the fifth year. After passing a comprehensive state-based practical exam on the fifth course and diploma graduates continue their studies internship on a specialty dentist. The best students, on the recommendation of the Academic Council, directed to further improve professional skills to master, graduate school, residency.
