Lviv Medical University history dates back 1661, when 20 January privilege of King John Casimir Lviv Jesuit College was elevated to the rank of Academy of the University of titles of four faculties. However, a complete medical faculty until the closing of the University in 1773 and has not been created.
November 16, 1784, under the privilege of Emperor Joseph II on October 21, 1784, the restoration of Lviv University with four faculties: Theology, Law, philosophical and medical.

During the 1891-1898 biennium. Were constructed and began to operate new academic buildings and clinical database University: anatomofiziolohichnyy, morbid anatomy, chemistry, obstetrics and gynecology, surgery, internal medicine, dermatology, otorhinolaryngology and others. In the first half of the XX century in Lviv taught medicine came from the University of Krakow, Vienna, Heidelberg and other leading European centers of education. Department of Medical Faculty of Lviv University scientists led by world-renowned professors G. Kadi, V. Šimonović, A. Beck, J. Prus, A. Mars Rydyґer L., A. Cieszyn, M. Nentskyy, J. Parnas, R. Vayґl, B. Nowicki and others.

Since the beginning of the German occupation of Lviv activities of higher education institutions stopped. May 20, 1942 order of the German occupation administration at Lviv Medical Institute was established professional medical courses. Their curriculum is not fundamentally different from the pre-war and were almost identical to the German program of higher medical education. Later aforementioned institution has received the official name of State medykoprofilaktychni professional courses. Its Putting in place and activities were made possible thanks to the dedicated work of the national sacrificial Professor M. Panchyshyn and Dr. R. Osinchuk.
October 1, 1944, two months after the liberation of the city from the German occupation of Lviv State Medical Institute began a new school year.

October 17, 1996 Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine №1262 Lviv State Medical Institute received the status of a higher educational institution IV level of accreditation and was renamed the Lviv National Medical University.
October 21, 1998 University named Danylo Halytsky, first king of Galicia-Volyn state. Daniel Galician conducted at the time the progressive government and administrative reform, education and culture developed, improved and created an army for his first contemporary medical school, which initiated the development of medicine in Galicia.
August 21, 2003 Presidential Decree number 872/2003 Ukraine Lviv State Medical University named Danylo Halytsky, taking into account national and international recognition of the consequences of its activities, contribution to the development of national education and science, given the status of National Medical University.
